Captain John's
About This Spot
Stepping into Captain John’s, you’re welcomed by the warm rhythms of a lively neighborhood spot that feels like an extension of home. The hum of regulars sharing stories at the bar blends effortlessly with the steady clink of glasses and the inviting murmur of a kitchen busy at work. Here, time moves at a relaxed pace—easy and unhurried—where the focus is on savoring each moment and every bite.
This is a place where the salty tang of the sea drifts softly through the air, setting the stage for a celebration of fresh, thoughtfully prepared seafood. The atmosphere balances a casual sports bar’s familiar buzz with the comforting charm of a no-frills grill, making it equally suited for a weekend brunch or an evening catch-up over cocktails. Whether you find yourself settled next to the glowing TV screens or tucked into a quiet corner of the lounge, the mood is inviting and easygoing.
The menu whispers of generous platters piled high with fried Ipswich clams and tender scallops, each bite recalling the ocean’s bounty delivered fresh daily. Onion rings crackle alongside crispy haddock, while classic subs and sandwiches carry a comforting familiarity without pretense. Drinks flow as warmly as the conversations—rainbow-hued cocktails and cold craft beers ease you into the night or brighten up a lazy afternoon.
What stands out most here is the genuine care threaded through the experience: servers who remember your name and preferences, portions sized for sharing, and a community vibe that makes regulars feel like family. Captain John’s isn’t just a stop for a meal—it’s a spot to slow down, connect, and taste the local character of Lowell through flavors that speak of tradition and freshness alike.

A Delectable Feast from the Ocean If you’re searching for a meal that truly celebrates the bounty of the sea, look no further than a perfectly crafted seafood platter. Recently, I had the pleasure of enjoying a seafood platter that surpassed all expectations and set a new standard for freshness, variety, and flavor. The platter arrived beautifully arranged, with an enticing selection that included succulent shrimp, crispy clams, flaky fried haddock, and sweet scallops. The presentation made this dish as delightful to look at as it was to eat. Every item on the platter radiated freshness. Notably, there was no trace of fishiness—just the clean, delicate flavors you’d expect from top-quality seafood. Each bite demonstrated that only the best ingredients had been chosen. This seafood platter was a true celebration of the ocean’s gifts. Whether you’re a seafood aficionado or a newcomer to the genre, this platter will leave you savoring every last bite and planning your next visit. Highly recommended! From the minute we walked in the door our friendly bartender Danielle made us feel welcome and at home. We will be back!

Our group has been going here for 10 years. Once a month religiously. We just had lunch there. First of all, having Cheryl as a server is, in itself, the BEST! The place is a classic. Serving incredible FRESH fried seafood platters at rock bottom prices. I just had the best seafood chowder that I’ve ever had. Great drinks! Hometown crowd sets the stage in this no frills, fantastic place to be.

Tried this place out on a work visit to Boston. Great little place. Had the seafood platter, which is recommended 100% and the seafood chowder. Seafood chowder was on point, the potatoes and seafood in it came out piping hot and full of flavors; salty, savory, not too thick just right. This is a must have when visiting. The chowder was chocked full of meat; chunks of fish, oysters, scallop and hearty chunks of potatoes The seafood platter was layered with fries then crispy fried fish and then surrounded with battered fried oysters, shrimps and scallops. One plate will feed two people. Also came with a side of homemade slaw which had just the right amount of sweetness to it. Just a side note, sodas are not free refill. Might be just that I'm from the south and am accustomed to free refills. Nevertheless, this seafood joint did its job, I left there with leftovers for late night snack. Thank you for a great first impression. Service was great for the most part, just once or twice had to wait a little bit for drink refills, but it's all good. Parking is ample behind the restaurant in a big lot with paid parking through the passport parking app.
